My friend sent me this interesting article about how small rural Japanese schools are becoming. The article is a bit of an exaggerated version of what my town is experiencing, although not much different.
Yokohama-machi, where I live, has a population of about 4,500 people. 20 years ago there were about 6,000 people. Here are the populations of my schools:
Monday Middle School: 150 students
Tuesday Elementary School: 30 students
Wednesday ES: 80 students
Thursday ES: 33 students
Friday ES: 35 students
My biggest elementary school class is 17 students (a third grade class at my Wednesday school) and my smallest class is 1 student (fifth grade at my Thursday school).
